Autumn Term 2023 Year 2
English
In English the children will be exploring and writing our own narratives, non-chronological reports, and instruction texts.
We will start by looking at a variety of traditional tales, non-fiction castle books and our class text will be ‘The Knight in Training’. After half term, we will be exploring a range of festivals and celebrations through non-fiction texts, looking at the Gunpowder plot, the Nativity and reading The Snowman by Michael Murpurgo.
In addition, we also work daily on phonics sessions following our Sounds Write scheme. Year 2 also develop their grammar, spelling and handwriting during their English lessons.

In maths our areas for learning will be numbers within 100, addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers, addition and subtraction word problems, measurement, graphs and beginning to look at multiplication and division (2, 5 and 10s). We aim for developing fluency in other core maths skills in our daily maths meetings. Children can also use ‘Timetables Rock Stars’ at home with to aid with their multiplication and division.

Our topics are Fairy Tales up until half term and Festivals and Celebrations after half term. Our work in History, Art, Music, and Design Technology will all link to these areas. In Science, we will be discussing seasonal changes, along with looking at animals including humans having off spring and what animals need to survive.

We will discuss how the prophet Muhammad is similar to prophets in other religions. After half term, we will be exploring why Christmas is important to Christians.

After half term, the children will have the opportunity to learn dance. Please ensure children arrive in PE kits on these days. Any changes will be updated on Weduc.
PSHE
In PSHE the children will be learning about managing change at school and at home. They will learn that some changes we can choose for ourselves and some changes happen are out of our control. We will also be discussing how our responsibilities change as we get older.
Homework
Homework is not compulsory but helps to aid the children in their learning. We encourage all children to read at home and enjoy being read to regularly, as this helps with all areas of the curriculum and builds a love of reading. Spellings tests will be on a Tuesday. The children do not have to join in with this if they do not want to, a handwriting challenge will be available instead. However, children are encouraged to learn them to support spelling in lessons. Children can access their spellings on Spelling Shed. The children have all been given the Year 2 common exception words to learn how to read and spell. Times Table Rockstars can be accessed to strengthen their knowledge of 2s, 5s and 10s or Numbots for those who need a different challenge. Learning with parents will also be used to support maths learning at home. Anything additional will be set on Google Classroom.
