Welcome to Year 4.
Miss Wright will be the teacher Monday-Wednesday.
Mrs Watson will be the teacher Thursday-Friday.
Miss Copley will be teaching in the class on alternate Wednesdays from breaktime.
Our PE days this half term are Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Children should come to school dressed in their PE kit on these days. Please make sure this is the school PE uniform, long hair is up, and no jewellery.
Year 4 will not be doing swimming this term and their Forest School block will be after October half term (we will send out information nearer the time).
English
This half-term we will be studying a book called Varjak Paw. We will be learning how to ‘magpie’ the techniques of skilled writers and then using some of these techniques in our own writing. We will also be looking at improving our handwriting and beginning our spelling journey for this year using the spelling shed. Please make sure your child knows how to log in to this and that they learn their spellings each week. Tests will be on Fridays.
Maths
In maths this half-term we will be focusing on place value and number and also addition and subtraction. We will be building on previous learning and will be working with numbers into the thousands. We will also be learning Roman numerals this half-term.
At the end of Year 4, children need to have learnt all of their times tables, so it is important that you also make sure your child knows their ‘rockstars’ password and how to log on to this. Their tables tests will be on Mondays.
Topic
Our topic for this half term is The Romans. We will be finding out all about life in Roman Britain and specifically Roman Leicester, but will also learn about how the Romans invaded and controlled large areas of Europe. Children will learn about Roman gladiators, Roman Gods and Queen Boudicca, as well as how the Roman Empire finally fell.
We are planning a trip to Bosworth Battlefield – details to follow.
Science
This half term, we will be looking at teeth and the digestive system. We will also explore fair testing and making observations.
Homework – spelling, reading, times tables.
Each week children will be given spellings to learn and these will be tested on a Friday. These can be practised on the papers given each week, but also on the spelling shed.
Children will also be expected to read every week at home and record this in their reading diaries. Children should aim for 5 times a week please with an adult signing to say they have heard reading. Thursday morning will be ‘book check and change’ morning but children may change their books in addition to this time as and when they need to.
By the end of Year 4, children will need to know all of their times tables so this will also be a big focus this year. Children should be practising on times tables rockstars every week, and trying to improve their speed of recall.
