Spring Term 2024
Year 3 have lots of exciting areas to investigate this Spring Term! In maths, we will be looking at multiplication and division first, then we will be exploring fractions and finally, time. We have been practising how to tell the time in maths meetings in the Autumn Term so hopefully we will get rather good at this!
We have already embraced the new CUSP Curriculum for English and the children are doing really well at tackling the new challenges this presents. In writing, we are looking at 3rd person narratives, revisiting non-chronological reports, advanced instructional writing and then first person narratives. The 3 books we are using for our reading this term are: “Sam Wu is not afraid of the dark”, “My Shadow” and “Operation Gadgetman”.
Science will involve some new learning and some revisiting. The first week we will be exploring the affects of food on our bodies, the skeleton and how muscles work. Later on we will be learning about flowering plants, photosynthesis and pollination. We will be revisiting some areas of the UK for geography as well as bringing in some new learning. In history, we will be doing a quick revisit of the Stone Age to the Iron Age then we be will exploring the Romans.
The new curriculum works slightly differently as we will be taking “chunks” of subjects to explore in greater depth so we are starting with a “chunk” of science, we will then do a chunk of Design Technology and so on. Revisiting areas of the curriculum ensures prior learning is thoroughly embedded into the memory long-term.
Year 3 are also swimming this term on Thursdays – they do not need to come in PE kits for this – school uniforms please. PE will take place on Tuesdays where we will be investigating balances in gymnastics. There will be no PE Wednesdays whilst we are swimming. In computing, we will be learning how to sequence sounds and using branching databases. PSHCE consists of looking at healthy lifestyles (this links nicely in with our science) and working together/teamwork. Finally, in music, we will be exploring rhythm and pitch.
